A battery energy storage system (BESS), battery storage power station, battery energy grid storage (BEGS) or battery grid storage is a type of energy storage technology that uses a group of batteries in the grid to store electrical energy.
Since 2010, more and more utility-scale battery storage plants rely on lithium-ion batteries, as a result of the fast decrease in the cost of this technology, caused by the electric automotive industry. Lithium-ion batteries are mainly used. A 4-hour flow vanadium redox battery at 175 MW / 700 MWh opened in 2024.
For safety and security, the actual batteries are housed in their own structures, like warehouses or containers. As with a UPS, one concern is that electrochemical energy is stored or emitted in the form of direct current (DC), while electric power networks are usually operated with alternating current (AC).

When compared to lithium batteries, using vanadium flow batteries for telecom has a number of key advantages: Vanadium flow batteries have no degradation of capacity over time; instead, they’re able to discharge fully at 100% throughout the battery’s entire lifespan. The average vanadium flow battery lasts 25 years or longer.
Other flow-type batteries include the zinc–cerium battery, the zinc–bromine battery, and the hydrogen–bromine battery. A membraneless battery relies on laminar flow in which two liquids are pumped through a channel, where they undergo electrochemical reactions to store or release energy. The solutions pass in parallel, with little mixing.
A flow battery may be used like a fuel cell (where new charged negolyte (a.k.a. reducer or fuel) and charged posolyte (a.k.a. oxidant) are added to the system) or like a rechargeable battery (where an electric power source drives regeneration of the reducer and oxidant).
Flow batteries can be classified using different schemes: 1) Full-flow (where all reagents are in fluid phases: gases, liquids, or liquid solutions), such as vanadium redox flow battery vs semi-flow, where one or more electroactive phases are solid, such as zinc-bromine battery.
On November 20, 2022, the first foreign-invested enterprise cluster in Hainan Free Trade Port serving foreign-invested enterprises was unveiled in Qiongshan District, Haikou, and six foreign-invested enterprises signed letters of intent to move in at the same time.
